Plate colour influences portion size
Changing the colour of your dinner plate could be the answer to losing weight, say scientists in the US.
They discovered that people tend to eat 20% more when the foods on their plate ‘blends in’ with the background.
People serve themselves bigger portions on plates that match the colour of their food, than if they were serving the same meal on a plate of contrasting colour, the researchers believe.
In the study, people were given either a red or a white dinner plate and shown two buffet tables offering pasta; one in tomato sauce and the other in cream sauce.
Those given plates that “matched” their food – red for tomato sauce, or white for cream sauce – gave themselves helpings between 17 and 22% larger than those with plates of contrasting colour.
Further research has shown that the average person eats about 92% of a portion they serve themselves.
The study, by researchers at Cornell University in the US, was repeated several times on groups of 60 participants. Results suggest that the actual colour of the food and plates made no difference; it was the contrast between the two that was important.
