kenafa in dubai?

23 May

kunafa1

i have a confession – i love kenafa! i dreamed about it last night (which was highly disturbing)..

for me… the perfect kenafa is crunchy on the top (so not too much syrup) and cheesy and gooey underneath…

the play on textures is what i love most – with the subtle taste of crushed pistachios and rose water.. for me.. this is the ultimate dessert!!!!

in kuwait! i have a few places i go for my kenafa fix! but in dubai.. i have yet to find the perfect kenafa fit for me…

so please – can any one let me know where to get great kenafa/kanafa/kunafa in dubaiii????

PLEASE ;p

Review: The Great Gatsby

17 May

the-great-gatsby-poster1-399x600

i was super lucky to be able to watch The Great Gatsby before it was officially came out in Dubai – thanks to Tiffany & Co that had an event and had a private cinema viewing for everyone invited to the event… (you can read about that here)

now…

The Great Gatsby – originally a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald – now a movie featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan.

the official synopsis of the movie is:

“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

my thoughts – it is an captivating movie with bold characters and portrayal of a time in America where the country was thriving and it was the life of excess and excitement – the flapper era! oh how i wish i could experience that time!

what i loved was how that period was represented – it was beautifully done! the costumes, the glamour, the houses.. i really felt consumed by the movie… it was almost if i was there and looking in…

i don’t want to reveal too much – but the change in your feelings towards the characters changes drastically throughout the movie, and towards the end, you don’t see most of the characters in the same way you did in the beginning…

what i didn’t like s much was the ending – just because you have more hope that people are less selfish and less self centered…

for me, i loved the first hour and a half a lot more than the last bit… but all in all.. i would say a definite must watch – a gripping tale of love, lust, desire, selfishness and purity…

if you have seen it – let me know what you think :)

popcorn @ tiffany’s?!?!

16 May

yesterday, my friend managed to score an invite to the Tiffany & Co event – they were showcasing The Great Gatsby jewellery and giving out cinema tickets for the movie in a private showing @ Dubai Mall!

everyone was dressed sooo glamourously! and the ushers had little flapper dresses – they looked absolutely stunning!!

so her and I went along – and wow! the whole event was soooo well organised! it was super impressive.. we walked into the store and had a quick look around the jewellery! it was sooo beautiful…

and then we were escorted to the mall taxis – with dressed up chauffeurs – who took us to the cinema… it was so surreal! being all dressed up and being inside a mall on this little car… when we got upstairs to the cinema – we were served popcorn and drinks (in a Tiffany’s cup! how lovely!!)

the cinema was made up entirely of gorgeously dressed people – it just felt very odd being dressed up in a cinema – i loved it!

at the beginning of the movie – we learnt a lot about how F. Scott Fitzgerald had a close connection to Tiffany & Co – it was very dear to him and a usual choice for gifts…

and the movie was just amazing! (review to follow soon ;p)

i couldn’t take my eyes of some of the jewellery!

it was an amazing experience!!!!

I love u even more now TIFFANY & CO!

childhood: what’s in a name?

12 May
i wonder what this child is called so that I never name anyone I know that! ;p

i wonder what this child is called so that I never name anyone I know that! ;p

when i was littler, only about 5 or 6, i remember not being very happy with my name..

my real name has arab origins, but i was commonly called by my nickname – incidentally a lot of my extended family didn’t know my official name… and thought my nickname was my actual name

this was all too complicated for me at the young age when i just wanted to feel like i fit in..

what i really wanted to be called was: Shirley!!!!!

i even tried encouraging my parents to change my name – no luck!

now, i believe that names affect your personality – had i been called something like moody – i would have not been so cheeky ;) (tee hee hee – in my head that’s funny ;p – and what a lovely place my head is :D)

back to initial chain of thought – since names have an affect on personality – i believe i would not have made a good shirley… it just has a lot of odd connotations in my head now – from lots of different movies, etc

i.e.
Person 1: surely you can’t be serious?
Person 2: i am serious! and don’t call me shirley!

(no idea where that’s from – but it plays out in my head everytime i think of the name shirley)

so i leave you with the words of shakespeare:

“What’s in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”

topsy turvy world?

7 May

fall_ROADKILLSTART

what i find really strange is that the balance of the world seems to be have tipped in the past couple of months..

everything seems to be going a bit crazy.. around the world and in my life too… i don’t know if everyone else feels the same…

there have been earthquakes around the world..

bombs – including boston, iraq, pakistan

other sorts of disasters: bangladesh collapse of factory building, mexico gas tanker blast

even the price of gold has been all over the place…

add in political and economic uncertainty

coupled with the fact that barcelona lost to bayern munich 4-0 the first leg – and 3-0 the second leg of the UEFA Champtions League… and life just doesn’t make sense anymore!

i just feel that the world seems to get more and more chaotic…

has it always been this way or have i just been more aware of the news?

its a really sad state of affairs and i really do wish that life was easier on a lot of people..

i wish we had more peace (as cliche as it sounds), mutual respect, and desire to help others succeed as opposed to pure selfishness…

tomorrow when i wake up.. i want to hear something good happening in the world.. i really do…
